NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Oceanic Freshwater Budget and Transport as Derived from Satellite Radiometric Data

چکیده
Blended satellite–ship evaporation and SSM/I retrieved precipitation fields are used to compute oceanic freshwater budget (FWB) and transport (FWT) over a 3-year period (1988–90). In order to validate the results, comparisons on monthly, seasonal, and multiyear average bases are performed with ECMWF analyzed field and climatology respectively. For May 1988, differences between ECMWF output and the present monthly estimate are within 2 mm day21 (73 cm yr21). Comparison with climatology shows that global discrepancies for longterm average drop down to 36 cm yr21 rms with a tendency for satellite-derived results to enhance climatological features. Differences are found to correlate with FWB patterns: large positive differences are observed in strong evaporative regions (eastern tropical Pacific), whereas negative differences are observed over the eastern part of the intertropical convergence zone and the northwestern part of the subtropical basins. Over the latter, precipitation is strongly dominant in our results, whereas climatology features rather slightly negative or positive contribution to the FWB (i.e., evaporation). Over the Gulf Stream, for example, climatology indicates that ocean is losing about 100 cm yr21 freshwater while FWB is balanced in our computation. FWT is then computed and compared with climatological and in situ estimates. Differences with climatology are found to be 0.2 Sv rms (Sv [ 106 m3 s21) in the Atlantic, Indian, and Northern Pacific Oceans, and results generally match estimates derived from oceanographic data within the same error level, except in the Indian Ocean. The major disagreement is observed in the southern Pacific Ocean where results, although confirming the direction of the FWT, suggest that 2.48 Sv is entering the Pacific Ocean, whereas climatologies only give a northward transport equal to

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Monthly Climatologies of Oceanic Friction Velocity Cubed
Different measures of wind influence the ocean in different ways. In particular, the time-averaged mixed layer turbulent energy production rate is proportional to !u *", where u* is the “oceanic friction velocity” that is based on wind stress. Estimating !u *" from monthly averages of wind stress or wind speed may introduce large biases due to the day-to-day variability of the direction and mag...

متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Lagrangian Analysis and Predictability of Coastal and Ocean Dynamics 2000
The first Lagrangian Analysis and Predictability of Coastal and Ocean Dynamics (LAPCOD) meeting took place in Ischia, Italy, 2–6 October 2000. The material presented at LAPCOD 2000 indicated both a maturing of Lagrangian-based observing systems and the development of new analysis and assimilation techniques for Lagrangian data. This summary presents a review of the state-of-the-art technology i...
متن کاملSome notes on the characterization of two dimensional skew cyclic codes
A natural generalization of two dimensional cyclic code ($T{TDC}$) is two dimensional skew cyclic code. It is well-known that there is a correspondence between two dimensional skew cyclic codes and left ideals of the quotient ring $R_n:=F[x,y;rho,theta]/_l$. In this paper we characterize the left ideals of the ring $R_n$ with two methods and find the generator matrix for two dimensional s...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Tropical Atmospheric Variability Forced by Oceanic Internal Variability
Atmospheric general circulation model experiments are conducted to quantify the contribution of internal oceanic variability in the form of tropical instability waves (TIWs) to interannual wind and rainfall variability in the tropical Pacific. It is found that in the tropical Pacific, along the equator, and near 25°N and 25°S, TIWs force a significant increase in wind and rainfall variability f...
